3 Is The Magic Number

3 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
The lines at Best Buy are stretching across five blocks, eBay’s sold the f—k out, and Mom and Dad sure ain’t throwing down $599. Yup, PlayStation 3′s in town. It was about this same time last year when we reviewed Microsoft’s latest-gen console, Xbox 360, and gamers and non-gamers alike were psyched beyond belief with the system’s technological possibilities. But PlayStation is the real heavyweight champ, plus it’s got loads of new features that Xbox doesn’t—most of which, like Blu-ray, were at the root of PS3′s multiple delays. Ahh, but wait no longer, fiends—November 17, 2006 is upon us and we’ve got the scoop.—Clay Staeshon

WHAT THIS THING’S GONNA COST YOU
It’s $499 for the leaner-featured 20GB model and $599 for the full-featured 60GB model. (If you can find either for sale, that is.)

WHAT YOUR LOOT IS GONNA GET YOU
Controllers: PlayStation 3′s new controllers may look nearly identical to Sony’s traditional DualShock design, but the guts tell an entirely different story. First of all, they’re wireless via Bluetooth 2.0 EDR (not 2.4GHz RF, like Xbox 360), so you’ve got faster data transfers and support for any device using Bluetooth: headsets, mice, keyboards, and so on. Secondly, these suckers are motion sensitive and can detect movement in six degrees: up, down, left, right, forward, and backward. That said, don’t expect vibration on the new controllers, because that confuses the motion sensors.

The Brain: Powering the PS3 is a retardedly fast 3.2GHz Cell Broadband Engine, 512KB L2 cache, the RSX “Reality Synthesizer graphics-processing unit, and 2.5″ removable hard drives. Basically, this thing’s a super-supercomputer. On top of PS3′s raw horsepower, you can throw in a high-def Blu-ray optical disc drive; four USB ports; memory stick, compact flash, and SD readers; PSP connectivity; WiFi (802.11b/g); one HDMI output; a high-def IP camera; and TiVo-esque digital video recording capabilities. Oh, and don’t forget backward-compatibility with PS2 and support for CDs/DVDs. For you n00bs out there, this means PlayStation 3 is one of the illest, if not the illest, entertainment devices ever invented.
