This review is best kept short. Ben Chasny is a guitar player in the Bay Area psych-rock band Comets On Fire. He also records solo albums under the name Six Organs Of Admittance. While his prior solo efforts have shown moments of brilliance, Shelter From The Ash delivers a masterpiece of psych-rock and ambient folk weird-outs. The album exhibits a wonderfully slow, trippy quality that’s so lacking in many modern drone and psych revival bands. Chasny’s whole vibe offers a real throwback to late 60s and early 70s bands like Amon Duul II, Can, and Os Mutantes without every being overly derivative. Former Nation Of Ulysses guitarist (and current F—king Champs overlord) Tim Green, along with Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Superwolf, GBV), and Comets On Fire’s Noel Hamonson contribute as well. Well worth the purchase.—Arlie Carstens
