Today we bring you the unfortunate news that editor Eric Stricker, a cherished member of the TransWorld SKATEboarding family, has passed away. He was a fine editor and an even finer friend, whose memory will continue to live in the pages of TWS for years to come.
Our thoughts, prayers, and hearts go out to the Stricker family.
Please share a story, a memory, or a kind word for our friend and fellow staffer, who was, and still is an inspiration to all.

Cullen Poythress, Ashton Maxfield, and Eric Stricker

Sticknine as we called him back when I was photo editor for the newly transplanted Strength Magazine(2002) was one of the hardest working editors I had come to know in those days. We had an uphill battle competing with the likes of Skateboarding’s big four mags then. Everyday in that office was a triumph in creativity, perseverance, and worth ethic. Many nights I left the office and returned the next day to find Eric there in the morning wearing the same clothes and having slept a couple hours under his desk. He lived burning the midnight oil, his fucking laugh and sense of humor was inspirational. He let me borrow his whole metal CD collection because I was DJing a metal night and he sat there helping me pick out choice tracks, fuck I actually never gave them back, I had them for years after, the last time I saw him Eric’s wife Arnette she told me that he brings it up from time to time, shit Eric I’m sorry I never returned them, I’m sorry we lost track and lost touch. Your mark will always remain with me. Those days in that office with you, Deak, Conyers, Quentin, Curtis(the male model). and Jeff were some of the best years of my life and I wanted to say thanks for the chance to have been there with you.

Eric was one of the most passionate people I've ever encountered. Ever. You could feel it in his writing. You could feel it in every aspect of his life. He was the type of guy that if he had your back, he HAD your back. No question about it. He brought an unmatchable amount of energy to this world, and was here to share it, no matter who you were or where you were from. I'll miss his epic quotes, I'll miss his love for life and for people in general, and I'll miss all the blood, sweat, and tears he put into this magazine day in and day out. He truly was someone special. Rest In Peace, my friend.

Stricker is a good soul. He was always friendly, always considerate and always generous. I am so glad I got to work with him, and share beers with him during all those late nights he was here. TransWorld won't be the same without him.

too young man. RIP brother

My respect for Eric is unparalleled! When Ben said he had your back, mother f&^cker had your back hard! It was almost like you had a big brother with you at all times when you were around him. I am still in disbelief of this tragedy and will remember him everyday like I do all my close friends and family that have passed before me through moments I shared with him. I never had the privilege to work with Eric in an everyday environment, but have the honor to call that son of a bitch a GREAT friend. I will always love and miss you, amigo! To his amazing wife Arnette and all my friends at Transworld, I can't begin to tell you how hurt and sorry I am. Let's wrap this kids cruiser board in a Chicago Bears jersey and shrine them in his honor! Miss you already, Eric. I will slappy some red curbs and eat some fried pickles and toss back a brew at Hooters in your honor!
Rest in peace my friend!

Stricker was a great guy to be around. He always supported us and motivated us, I looked up to him. It will be sad to not see you in the office. You will be missed homie. My condolences to his family.

Today is a very sad day, and I'm in total shock. Can't believe the news.. I had the pleasure of working with Stricker for the past 8 years and he was a real class act. Hands down one of the BEST dudes out there — not only in the skateboarding industry, but in everyday life. Just a super legit, stand up guy. This is a terrible loss, and he will be greatly missed by many. My thoughts are with the Sticker family and the entire TWS crew. May you rest in peace, my friend.

Stricker was a true individual, a rare breed these days. He always spoke from the heart, and stood by his beliefs. He has had a tremendous impact on skateboarding through the pages of TransWorld. He provided so much insight during the many years he worked diligently, and passionately to let his voice be heard, and share his love for skateboarding. He has helped out so many skaters to realize their potential and follow thier dreams. Stricker was a real friend, and I was lucky to work closely with him and we have shared countless laughs and memorable sessions. He loved to see his friends ripping, and he was the first to hand out ice cold beers when the time was right. When he would get hyped, he would be on FIRE! His quotes are timeless, his laugh is timeless and his spirit effected everyone he came in contact with. The guy had a big smile, a big set up, and an even bigger heart. We will hang his Assault Vehicle above the door to the TW Skate Park , so he will fovever be a part of every session that goes down within these walls.
Much love Stricker, I'm really going to miss you.

I woke up this morning to text messages from friends that knew i new eric saying he had passed away..
( what the f@*k ..! ) This is the last thing you ever want to hear.. So i want to share my last personal encounter with eric…The last time i saw eric was at ASR a few years ago in san diego .. and by this time he had moved away from home ( chicago area ) for the big time life in california and to start working at transworld… So he see's me at a club and stops me and instantly start's talking about the last time we had skated together and he remembered exactly the place , the people who were there, and what tricks went down … And all i could say was " Whoa" what an amzing memory this guy had .! So he gave me his new number and we had continued to talk once and awhile after i came home.. and now just a few weeks ago we spoke on the phone , and he tells me that he wants to come back to Chicago to do a skate jam event before the cold weather sets in ,So now we are getting stoked because eric has not forgotten about us back in the midwest.. everyone here back in Chicago was looking foreword to seeing eric again , hearing all his stories and seeing all the talent he was bring with him for this skate jam.. the skate sceen around here was buzzing for this weekend to come.. Well now that the weekend is almost here .. We wish it would never had come because he would still be here. Well eric, come this saturdays skate jam .. These grinds are for you eric.

I am really sad about hearing the passing of Eric, he always had our back in any project we were trying to do. From his days with Strength mag up to his current TWS status, he supported our efforts with sincerity. I wish I had the chance to get to know him a little better. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
September 24th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Every time I got to hang out with Eric it was a true pleasure and working with him was a privilege.
He was one of the rare people in our industry who always had time for everyone and I was lucky enough to have had many great moments and conversations and able to work on some great projects with him for TWS.
My heart and prayers go out to all his family and friends.
RIP Eric Stricker

Eric Stricker to me, was one of those stoic legendary characters with a tough manly exterior; yet was one of the kindest, smartest, most generous human beings I have ever met. Whenever I was in Chicago in the past with Eric, he welcomed me warmly into the Stricker family and was my tour guide for the great city he loved so much.
My deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers go to his beautiful wife Arnette, his mother Carol and his brother Ryan.
September 24th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
I knew Eric since 2000 when he was at Strength and I was at the Fridge, both slugging it out as young guns in the game. It had probably been 7 years when I walked past the Thompson East Hotel this summer and heard someone yell my name. It was Strick. We hugged and bugged out on how long it had been. I was super excited to have an old friend come back into my life. And now he's gone. I really can't believe it. You were one of the raddest dudes Eric, I wish I could do something to make this right. Rest in Peace.

R.I.P. Striker, you had one of the most unique views on understanding skateboarding, and the ideas and attitudes you contributed to Transworld were legendary. Gone, but NEVER EVER forgotten, skateboarding will truly miss you. From Chicago, with much love, we hope you truly live on in heaven, and may you ALWAYS…… ROLL FOREVER.
September 25th, 2009 at 1:56 am
I never worked in skate, but that didn’t matter.
You were the very first person to befriend me when I moved to LA 8 years ago… And you’ve stayed true since then. I will never forget that.
We had a lot of good times. Best memories were our Hollywood hang sessions with Seu and Coop back in the day
You had my back and you were always there like a brother…Thank you.
God bless the loved ones you left behind. My heart goes out to your family…
Malama pono Eric, a hui hou.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Eric really was one of the raddest guys out there. His excitement was genuine, his intelligence was apparent when he had a conversation or wrote an article. He was smart enough to understand the negative aspects of everything but loving and hopeful enough to focus on the positive.
He was able to connect with everyone on different levels because of all this and had an amazing way with people and situations.
Way, way too early, my friend. Way too early. Your contributions to skating and your wise words will live on.

To the family,
This loss is going to be difficult for all of us that knew Stricker. It's hard to even go into this, but I needed to write to let everyone know he was one of the best brothers on the planet.
Stricker gave me my first shot at journalism with a piece for Black History month written years ago, in the pages of Strength magazine. We touched a chord in the community and he said it was the only issue they ever printed to sell out completely. He always joked that he had the only copy left and he cherished it as a memento that he made the right decision to make such a bold issue. (matt deak get at me!)
He laid the path that has moved me away from the safety of my New England home, to the dirty south(FL-SPoT 4 life), then the west coast and all the points in between. (holla at me TX and the Cayman Islands. He was the one who gave the approval for the Cayman trip) that ended up in TWS Business)
We used to talk about how amazing it was to do anything for TWS because it's what we lived as kids. His move into the editorial seat helped pull so many skaters up in this industry. He was never jaded and wanted everyone to enjoy the limelight, if you put in the effort, you would be gracing the pages at some point, fo' sho'. You need proof? Well, just look at how much love Deluxe gets since he and Skin made things happen. Transworld is now just that TRANS-WORLD; no old wounds, only new ground to roll upon.
My heart is heavy knowing that he's left us:( He was my boss, and my mentor and he always made time to help me focus behind the scenes. He was the one who said it was a good idea for me to learn to shoot, so I could supplement my articles and learn to get my entire vision across. I promised I would get the new Kareem Campbell interview done for him, and he put me to the task that I had to do it in less time than it took Atiba to get it done. We believed it took him 2 years and I'm coming in somewhat on schedule with that one, but now it has a much greater meaning than it did before.
My friends we have lost a great member of our skateboarding family and my mind is ill at ease.Eric, I thank you so much for what you have given us! I pray that you are in a better place and that one day we will meet again.Rest In Peace brother. We all love you very much!

I only knew Stricker for the last year or so, but he was definitely one of my favorite people to see around at all of the events. We had a few beers and a few laughs and I was always happy to hang with him. He was totally behind our video article we had this year and really made it happen. I am grateful for knowing him, even if it was for a short time.

Eric Stricker is one of the best dudes I have ever had a chance to hang out with in my life. I am so grateful for everything he did for me. He was the first person to run a sequence of mine. After he ran that he gave me the opportunity of a life time to be a intern at TWS. He was always down to skate, laugh, talk, or even pound a soldier. I learned so much about the skateboard industry from that dude. He never got pulled into the bull sh*t and always knew it was just skateboarding and nothin was very serious. The man was a great friend and pleasure to work for. He will truly be missed everywhere his words were read. I am grateful for all the hours I spent in his office talking with him. I will always be inspired by his memory. I hope the best for Arnette , his family and TWS.

Eric was one of the bright spots in the Transworld office. When everyone else was stressing on deadlines, you could always count on Stricker for a smile, a cold beer, and a reminder not to take life so seriously. He was a great friend and he touched the lives of so many. I still can't believe he's gone. My heart and thoughts go out to Arnette, Carol, and Ryan. I hope you find the strength you need to get you through this terrible time. Know that you have a family here amongst all of Eric's friends, and you can count on us for anything. Eric, we miss you. The city of Chicago feels pretty empty without you.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Stricker and I were hired at TWS at the same time back in Jan of 2005. Right away I liked the guy. He had a great personality and his passion, which was fiery at times, was unmatched. He fought the good fight for all things skate. I left TWS for a few years and was always psyched when Stricker would come by Black Box to say hello and skate the park. I was even more psyched when I got the chance to return to TWS last year and work once again with Eric, Skin and the crew. Over those few years I was gone, Eric grew comfortably into his role and was the glue to the meetings and became the voice of Transworld Skateboarding. He wrote about it and lived it and was always down for a session out back or good trip with good friends, especially to his beloved Chicago. I went to Chicago for my first time with Sticker and the TWS crew last year and it was so rad to see him so psyched to share his town with us. Every street had a story about who skated a handrail or ledge. Nights out were filled with funny stories, one liners and unforgettable quotes. It breaks my heart to be here again in Chicago and not have the big Stricker personality keeping us company. To his family, Ryan, Carol and Arnette, I offer you my deepest sympathy. To all of us in this little world of skateboarding, we lost a great person and a great friend this week. Remember Eric fondly, share your stories and never forget the true skateboarder that he was. RIP in my friend.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Stricker was a true friend. He had that realness, the humanity, that isn't always prevalent in the bro… if Eric was your friend, it wasn't because of your title, or what you could do for him. Eric was a quality human being and I already miss him and all of our talks. He was funny and unassuming and smart. I miss him. And his wife, though I only met her a couple of times, just seems like such a sweet person. I can only imagine what she must be going through. My heart goes out to her.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Eric was a good friend of mine and I knew him since high school. I live in Chicago and didnt get to see Eric much over the last few years since he was working in Cali. Eric was an amazing, funny, and talented person, not to mention a true friend and a great skater. His humor and sarchasm were truly original and I have so many memories of the funny shit that used to go down with Eric and all of our skate crew. I consider myself very lucky to have known Eric and will never forget him. RIP

Very Sad! this guy has kept it real every since the Days at Strength magazine. We went to the new office
at Tws To say hello and got the warm welcomeand invite to skate when ever. My prayers go out to his family and friends
God bless

WOW… Where to begin? So sad as he was such a great human being. I've met Eric in 1990 when I moved into the Chi-town suburbs, and lived on the same street as him. We skated together, hung out, listened to Death Metal and tore it up. I can honestly say that there wasn't a single person that knew him, that wasn't a friend of his. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. You will be missed, bro.

Stricker was a great guy. He gave people a chance.
Stricker, youll be missed. Shred in peace. If there is an afterlife, ill bring the beers.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:30 am
I finally met Eric in person when Strength moved to LA. The first time I met him, he was rocking some old school black and white Nike trainers on "Coors Light Friday" at the office on Fairfax, mass shoe boxes all over his desk. Matt D over in the corner. Since that day, it's an honor say that Eric was one of the realest people I knew. So genuine, just a stellar vibe, all day, every day. Always talking some funny shit, making me laugh without trying. It's amazing how one person can so epitomize a generation of people powerfully connected by a beautifully simple, whimsical pursuit. He's everything we love about the crew we all grew up with. He's everything we remember about the friends at our local skate shop. He IS skateboarding, every part of the respect, passion, community, fun and friendship.

I grew up in Buffalo Grove too & skated many times with Eric. We was a great guy back then, & was living his dream. He will be missed.

I worked with Strick at Strength in the 90s, and kept in touch with him over the years. He was absolutely unforgettable as both co-worker and friend, hilarious and inspired and relentlessly insightful and f*cking profane. A true individual. He will be greatly missed.

Although Eric and I had never personally met face to face, I would say he was the most thoughtful person/stranger I had the opportunity to be in contact with. He and I had correspondence through the internet via message boards (niketalk) back in 2001. After coming back home from personal travels and obligations; I was welcomed home with a flow of Strength mags, tees and….Eric….those Paul Smith brown jump offs were used probably the best way you can ever think of…dogged and shredded in. I still have your VHS tape….your kindness and generosity will never ever be forgotten!!!!!! Tomorrow is never promised…
My condolences to the family/loved ones and skate community who were fortunate to had times with him.

Damn. I am so bummed to hear this. I meet a lot of people in this business/ in Los Angeles and when I first met Eric, I remember thinking that Eric is a cool, REAL dude, I'm sure Chicago played a big part in that. My prayers are with his family and know you had a great son.

When I started at Transworld a couple years back, Eric was the guy that truly welcomed me with open arms. Like Eric I'm from Chicago so we had a lot in common; midwest values, our city's great food, our city's sports teams and passion for them…
Eric you will be missed by so many and you've touched all of us more than you can ever imagine. We dedicated our Transworld event to you this weekend in your hometown and we know you were smiling down on us! It was suppose to rain but you and the skate gods blessed us with a perfect day.
Thanks for being such a great friend and making such an impact on so many lives!
You will be missed!

Friends of mine worked at Strength in the Cincinnati days….that's how I met Eric. Dude was funny as hell and loved heavy metal- we got along famously. I had not seen him in a few years but judging from all of the outpouring thoughts of the good people here I just know he was tearing it up…. Rest in Peace, Eric.

Eric…our days as friends were young but our friendship is forever, you will be missed very much brother. I enjoyed playing golf and sharing a couple pints early last week, thank you for all the hospitality and great memories…never forget.

I lived in the same neighborhood as Eric growing up in IL. My mom is best friends with Erics mom and I know they are feeling this loss. I remember Eric being the nicest guy to everyone even the annoying neighborhood girls. =) I do not have a single memory of Eric that does not involve a skateboard or a BMX bike.

I grew up with Eric, and it really sucks that this happened to such a great time. His family was always really gracious in letting all of us kids come over and raise hell. His mom Carol would let us hang out, and Eric would take us over to a skateboarding ramp near his house. I sucked but it was more about hanging out with your buddies. We went to St Peters together in Arlington Heights, and us and a group of our buddies were always up to something but it was always in good fun. He was always cracking everybody up, and he was one of my best friends as a kid. Love you Strick, and my prayers are with your family.

Tragic loss, he will be missed. My thoughts are with his family

I am so shocked to hear this. I knew Eric from back in the Strength days. He was responsible for getting my first piece published and was very supportive of my ideas. Although I never got a chance to get to know Eric on a personal level, he immediately struck me as a real, positive, down-to-earth guy. His work obviously showed his creativity, intelligence, and dedication.
It's tough to see someone like this go. Rest in peace Eric and all my best to your family and loved ones.

My thoughts and prayers will be with him and his family. Its always a shame when a great man dies. He will be remembered as both a great person and a great skateboarder. RIP Eric.

We went to NMU together way up in Michigan. We used to skip class to go snowboarding.
I was so happy when Strength moved out to LA and i got to see his ass again.
My heart goes out to his family and friends.

I just came across the news about Eric aka "Strickdog" from his days growing up in Chicago in the snowboard scene. Eric had worked for me as a snowboard instructor at Raging Buffalo and would come into the Shred Shop when I worked there to hang out or get a new board. I always loved when I got to session the snow park with Eric. The guy had a lot of style and always brought a positive energy whether it be in a contest, playing fossball or cards, or just hanging out watching videos.I remember how excited he was when he came into the park to tell everyone he got the job at Strength. He was working for me at the time and was really nervous. When Strenth hired him the magazine instantly got better. I remember he received the opporunity after sending an email regarding the problems he had with their website. Yeah Eric tripped over great opportunties all the time, but always took them as far as he could. It is a shame we never kept in touch as much as we should have, he moved and I got married and had kids. I would call him every once in a while or shoot him an email. He was always a class act and good guy. I never met his wife but my thoughts and prayers are with her and his family. Rest in Peace my friend.

Rest in peace once a skater always a skater, as life goes on we now find something, a catstropical event like this.where either a loved one has passed, orwhen something we love dies like skateboarding as skating will never die neither will eric, hes in a better place right now looking over us. If he were here hed be telling us to live our lives not for us for him.He wants us to live, live like we never did, wat drives us to make us happy, drives him to know people know were with him, and well always will be cus that is wat were alll about.Spread love, shred and always i mean always have fun thats our way we do it for the fun and fame wat dont break us makes us, no fear, no sight of the future, and hell always bee ridin like he never did with noone to stop him riperic stricker.
