Lance Mountain Part 3

Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share to Digg Stumble It More...

For our December issue, Lance Mountain was shooting a Roll Call and finishing his part for Flip’s Extremely Sorry. Skin Phillips went up to Lance’s home in Arcadia, California to photograph and interview him. In this final installment, Lance talks about staying involved in skateboarding over the years, the pitfalls for kids coming up, and why he won’t play you in SKATE—but don’t worry, he didn’t mean any of it.

Part 1. Part 2.

Filmed & edited by Lee Dupont.

Thanks Lance! Great to hear about skateboarding from someone who has the perspective brought by many years. Best thing I've seen on this or any skate site.

    • splat says:

i agree with most of the shit lance is talking about, but ever since i can remember kids were always smokin doobies at the local skateparks. just what i was raised on. skating and gettin high, i luh dat shit

  2. Sam says:

Lance has probably the biggest heart in skateboarding. A true professional.

  3. Sdfasd says:

hes a one of a kind

  4. Cory says:

fear the lord lol… you make yourself sound like an idiot with some of those comments and if a skater can get tricks and video parts filmed while partying, drinking or smoking weed then that should not concern you.

    • goneskateboarding says:

but if you believe in god and can do all the same then youre an idiot? contradict yourself much? as far as religion goes im an atheist but i still respect his views and his choice because thats his way of thinking and its not going to change. also, if you listened to EVERYTHING he had to to say, he said that if you were down with that kind of stuff so be it, it just wasnt his thing.

      • Cory says:

ha i knew id get a response outta some fools thats just my opinion, i don't like people who openly dislike people for doing those types of things he should have kept that portion to himself thats all.

        • AUDITtheFED says:

Having an opinion is different than insulting one of the pioneers of the art you are degrading.

          • reckless says:

I think Lance is a cool dude, but I agree with you Cory…

@ others: you shouldn't try to deny Cory his opinion because you feel he is defacing you r idol (god, lance, or whoever). Not every one is a follower.

    • AUDITtheFED says:

You sound like the only reason you skate is to be better than someone else.

  5. duncan says:

i love this dude! (ha no homo but seriously he has transformed my view of skating it makes me wanna go skate sooo bad nd for all the right reasons.

  6. mathias says:

just a true skateboarder from the true heart! I was really avoided by his words! such a cool and awesome person!

  7. mack says:

that was awesome, it makes me wanna go skate. i could say a million things about this, all positive, but i"ll leave it at that.

  8. AUDITtheFED says:

So good, "If I looked at skateboarding now, i'd look at it like tennis" This speaks volumes of how corporations & media can manipulate any part of culture and turn it into a money churning machine. Street skating is under attack, as sick and abundant as the number of skateparks come up all over are, nothing compares to finding a spot that was never intended to be skated and just murder it to the ground. After the bailouts, most property out there is now public property anyway \\m/

  9. matt says:

its so funny how at the end he says he didnt mean any of it

  10. Guest says:

it's sick to see this. I can relate to him a lot because I share a lot of his views, and that's rad. but even if I did smoke or whatever, this guy is still great, and an amazing skateboarder

  11. jason says:

Lance is the best. Anyone who doesn't get it, just doesn't get it.

  12. Centor says:

hey lance, thanks for sending me your anti-hero pro model and flip pro model decks signed to me from you 3 Christmas ago. Ill always have them and they will always be special to me.

    thank you lance-

Lance this is not directed at you, but building off what you were saying. - what about the people who let money and power control their life. SO from the start they never open up to any of the simple things in life but end up with millions and millions. plus are complete assholes. So what if society puts them on a pedestal? they are still assholes.

everything you said about skateboarding applies to every activity that ever made it …. you know what the point beyond the "oh shit i cant win the 100 grand"? Its the realization that if you were skateboarding, playing football, basketball, soccer, anything with the mentality of making money you are tool. im no amazing skateboarder but that "oh man i can make money with this" idea came into my head once in one sport.. and i stopped playing for 2 years cause it straight ruined it for me. (also made me think back to the reasons i started as a 3 year old, fun) just have fun with it.

You will find true professionals like yourself, in every job, hobby, past time there is.

there is a ying to every yang.

  13. Bretto says:

Go off Lance. Still skatin sic and fearin the Lord.

  14. jay says:

Lance comes across like todays lifes experienced best skater * no 1 could describe skating beter than lance, straight up.. he makes a god in sk8n becoz he sees all aspects of skateboarding & he's seen everything in skateboarding & continues to rip! i wish for him to pull a 540 before he hits 50. he has the best 540s ever! YOUR A LEGEND FOR LIFE LANCE DO IT!!!!!
what he was meaning with the smoking & drinking is eventually it wil limit your physical desire & mind to wanna keep sk8n, especially progressing & growing, you all have to go through it tho, no one can tel you to giv up only the slams we take which makes us think twice .

  15. Rodrigo Brito says:

I do not agree with Lance's religious beliefs (I'm an atheist) but I love him for who he is - a skateboarder dedicated to skateboarding in itself rather than to himself as a skater, a gentleman, a man witn premature maturity who will always retains his youthful. He stands out as a great human being within skateboarding.

And Lance, even though I do not believe in God as you do, I think you have the exact right instinct as to who you are as a human and what humans should be like. I don't believe you have to be Christian in order to have it, but if you express your beliefs by being the way you are, it makes me happy to see it. I salute you with the utmost respect.

By the way, I met you once shortly in Lisbon c. 20yrs ago, just after you'd had a board stolen at a demo and were checking out a mini-ramp where I skated (at an Aquapark) and I really felt bad and ashamed for my countryfolk doing this, in particular to you. If you were ever here again, I would gladly pay you dinner to make up for it!

keep thumbs upping your own posts fed… haha

  17. AUDITtheFED says:

You kids are a riot. The +1 shows up automatically every time. But hey, keep thinking that I'm trying to prove something. When you're out on your own, have a family and begin to live your own life, you may wish you had organized your crew better and aimed all your discontent more appropriately at the system that enslaves you every 30 days.
