the first demo i went to was when i was 16. it was in springfield, ma. at junction skatepark. it was a popwar demo with cairo foster, raymond molinar, jon newport, chad timtim, & a bunch of other sick skaters. cairo foster completely killed everything, but chad timtim was my favorite. he was throwing down switch heelflip b/s tailslides on a two foot ledge like it was toooo easy!! i liked hanging out with the skaters afterwards though, chad tim tim hooked me up with some planters peanuts and we chilled before they left to the next demo stop :)

the first demo i attended was so many years ago i can’t remember the exact year. but i do remember the demo itself rather well. i would say it was at least fifteen years ago. the demo took place at my local park. it was called magic skatepark in reading PA. it was an old macadam park with big bowls and really rough ground. classic east coast. it was a great park until it was bulldozed a few years ago to make way for houses. but i digress. the demo was super rad to me as i was much younger and two of my favorite skaters were there. one of them being Kien “Donger” Lieu and the other was Sean Sheffey. the demo was amazing to say the least. they skated lines that i never thought of, pulled tricks i never imagined at the time. it was a great day of skating, food and good times. after the demo i got to meet both of them and they were super nice which was rad because i was just a little skate rat at the time. but to this day i can still see Donger launching out of one of the sketchy bowls up and over the chain link fence into the grass hill on the other side. he even rode the grass ride out for a bit until the overgrown weeds got the best of him. i’ll never forget that demo. a friend of mine still has his Donger deck autographed hanging on his wall. an amazing day that will forever be carved into my mind.

My first event was Tony Hawk’s Boom Boom Huck Jam in St. Louis on Aug. 14, 2008. My 10 yr. old son is just really getting into skateboarding and I was fortunate enough to win 4 tickets to this event. He loved every minute of it and is ready to go to another one!! We got wonderful pictures of all the skateboarders, motocross riders and bikes. It was an awesome thing to see.

The first demo i ever went to was an Emerica Demo in 04. I was 15 years old at the time and going through my tight pants stage. I was completely baker’d out and i just remember being soooo stoked to see Reynolds and the crew that when i first saw them i started screaming there names.. no homo. The crew was Reynolds, Spanky, Herman, Braydon, and I beleive Suski was there. Some idiot picked up Reynolds cigarette butt, it was cold out, it was the good old days.

The first demo I went to Tony Hawk and a few other Powell guys were there. Back in 1987-89 not sure of the exact year. I was young between 7-9 years old maybe. It was at Magic Skate Park near Reading Pennsylvania. That park is now ripped down an there a development on top of it. I remember being so exited to see him(Tony Hawk). I also remember my Dad(RIP) telling me one time years later that I said he’s so skinny that if he falls he’ll break every bone in his body all at once. He was ripping the park and the pool they had so hard I was talking about in for months. I have pictues from this demo somewhere. If I find them I’ll post them so all can see.
I’m still skating today over 20 years later. Thanks to the skaters like Hawk who inspired me going up and my Friends who still inspire me.
    Keep on pushing!

My first Skate Demo…ahh…I can remember it like it was yesterday. It was the DVS East Infection Tour at KCDC skate shop in Brooklyn. My friends and I were driving around trying to find the shop when we saw a mob of about fifty to a hundred skaters sessioning a ledge. We figured they were there for the demo, so we parked the car, got out and started skating with everyone else. As I was skating I noticed two familiar faces playing S.K.A.T.E. off to the side, it was Robert Lim and Jimmy Macdonald from the fiveboro skate team. I was so pumped, it was my first ever pro sighting. I just stared not believing what I was seeing, little did I know that was only the start. After about twenty minutes of skating everyone started to head over the to the shop which turned out to be on the same block. Everyone was packed into the shop, there wasn’t much standing room between the mini ramp and all the people crowding around for the best view. And then who walked through the door? None other than Daewon Song one of my biggest skateboard idols second only to Rodney Mullen. Following Daewon was Steve Berra, Kerry Getz, Daniel Castillo, and Zerred Basset. As Daewon walked past me he said, “What’s up?” and shook my hand. I was shaking with excitement as they climbed to the top of the mini ramp to start the demo. Everyone killed it especially Daewon, he did every blunt trick known to man and some of the highest airs possible on a mini. I asked him to do a half cab blunt 360 shuv out and he landed it perfect first try, definitely my favorite trick of the day. That day will live in my memory for ever. Even after a year and several great skate demos later (including Chris Cole, Mike Mo and Tony Hawk) that first one was still by far the best.

I’ve seen many demos over the years. But one sticks out in my mind the most. It was 1996-97 the Birdhouse team was doing a signing at Method Skate Shop in Near King a Pussia, Pa. Back then the Birdhouse
was stacked. The members at the signing were Tony Hawk, Heath Kirchart, Andrew Reynolds, Willy Santo & Jim Gecco. After the signing the demo was at FDR skate park in Philly. I remember Andrew who was sick at the time feeding me like 10 jones sodas as he just chilled in the weenabago. Everyone was so cool. Heath who was and still is my all time favorite skate was totally hungover. Bucky showed up to skate the vert ramp with Tony. First vert skating I saw in person. Willy got run over by a local ripper. I ate a hot dog from a vender on the way out and threw up all over the inside of my buddies 6 heads deep chevy blazer. Great day but cleaning the truck with my t-shirt and socks on the side of 95 sucked.

  • guymariano_owns Says:

the first demo i went to was the zumiez couch tour in puyallup. it was 10 minutes away from my house and so i got to the front of the crowd. i got my koston girl signed by all of the lakai team and i will always remember that day because eric koston waved at me when i called his name and then brandon bieble hardflipped the 10 set and his board flew rigth in front of me. i didnt think id ever get that close to one of my favorite pros. plus my favorite pro (guy mariano) was sick seeing as he is a legend and will always be remembered. he had the best part by far in fully flared.
