Zero/Mystery Trip ’06

So , the all time good lads at blackbox distribution organized a trip, in conjuction with morgan and stephanie at v7 distribution in france, to get the all time shredders of the horizontal wave in the b.b camp out to lyon for a week or so to hit spots , film things, and make photographic art of their bodys hurtling through the air for your enjoyment in on these very pages.
oh, and have a right laugh and get the job done, plus do a demo at v7s “teenage tour” lyon stop, of which there is many.
as tm for the trip i arrived diligently early in lyon before the shredd squad arrived. so stephenie checked me in to my hotel and i went to hook up with my TOP amigos at cliche skateboards, al boglio, seb curtis and jereme daclin. i had not been to lyon before, and by god , it was feeling like my kind of town already.
so later that day after getting some lunch and some spot talk from the cliche lads i went to meet the sultans of shredd off the plane. these being; john rattray, tommy sandoval, ryan bobier, adrian lopez, garrett hill and john allie. with the artists known as joey shigeo(celluloid art) and matt winterberg (dv art). im good mates with rattlesnake from the times of yor, and the alan glass no war for heavy metal tour and beyond, as he is my country men (nearly)..plus i consider allie , lopez and the artists good friends from previous trips into battle in the skateboard world that is “tours”. so meeting garrett , tommy gunz , and bobier was a first and they seemed well up for the crack from the get go.
our first night staying in downtown lyon was interesting, everyone except myself battling jet lag as usual in these cases, and a random french resturant was our food allocation where lopez and allie got the bloodiest steaks i have ever seen when they asked for “medium rare”, even when they got them back they were still full on raw dog! oh well..
the following three days we spent in a down town location being shown round by our v7 host cedric number one the filmer(cheers for driving) and cedric number 2 from the almighty sugar magazine (whats up seb and david!) and we went to some of the main spots lyon has to offer like the white banks where bobier did the mayday switch crook and hotel de ville etc etc.
as before mentioned, after jet lag , most of the dudes where awake till all hours. our hotel was right down town, and close to some heavy spots like the mushroom banks and the wave jeremie bonelessed into in the cliche vid. plus loads of ledges and marble everywhere. as the lads live in and around the sd california area where driving is a big part of your shredd time table , this was like a breath of freah air to just hack around and hit stuff as we found it ..plus being able to drink in the street is a french bonus to, so we enjoyed all this on those hot , pushing around in the early hours , night missions from our hotel exploring and loving skateboarding. after only three days and a few of these great nights out cruising the city by ourselves, everyone was getting on amazing and feeling the vibe, oh yeah !
the night before the demo morgan from v7 took us out to eat with his whole team , which was great, and a day later we did the demo at a wooden skatepark in lyon. hometown heroes joined in on the malee that is the phenomenon of the skateboard demo. the zero/mystery lads business is “stoke” , and stoke is what they delivered, in spades…well done soldiers.
the day after the demo , we had to move hotels apparently…so we did. only this hotel was futher in the cut this time, plus no van to ferry us around on our mission of devistation.
enter the all time good lads at cliche. im going to take a minute to make comparisons here if thats ok. blackbox distribution (thats zero/mystery/and fallens warehouse and distributor) , i know , is a skater owned and operated affair. from jamie and chad coming up with ideas , to brian and bill selling it over seas, to bama top tm-ing it,to drew working hard, to ggs david and kimmy selling in the states , to andrew frecs and james in the warehouse. everyone skates and has skating in there interest. same goes for the riders , and cliche in france is no different whatsoever. al, seb , jeremie and espicially junior who drove us around lyon for the next few days, gave us lyon in their style and we loved it. hot skate action in the day no questions asked, with junior at the wheel, and resturants and finally the vox ( their local bar ) in the evenings, made our trip to lyon amazing. skaters looking out for skaters, so sick.
also , you can tell a good trip when private or in jokes come into play. this trip was no exception. from ghostface killah lyrics, to tommys all time qoutes, to john allie being the “french champion” it never ended.
i dont want you to think that im painting to gay of a waltons type, bill and teds excellent adventure, stand by me, bro down trip ….but it was, so suck it !
anyway , i thought that some of my humble views of each of the lads thats business is “stoke” might interest those of you who would be into knowing more about these shredders of the horizontal wave , and what makes them tick. after all, to really know someone is to spend time with them on a tour or trip. you know it. if you dont , get out there and find out. and end up hating your so called best friend forever! just joking.

JOHN ALLIE.
john is an iteresting character. first off in meeting him, the human seems to have a quiet and considered approach to life. upon knowing john a while you tend to find he can talk trash on a coke can , rubiks cube, or diamond if you let him. i love people like this, generally, who constantly question whether something is worthy of praise or not. usually surveying what other people think on any given subject , then blatantly doing or saying the opposite. allies rath is fun to be around, i reckon. for instance , when in france, food as is of your palete coming from the states or the uk for that matter, is sometimes hard to find. you some times end up eating cheese, bread or meat a fair bit. upon discovery of a bagel shop with many styles of fillings near jbs ripping grounds of hotel de ville, we all sampled it and were stoked on this near by food spot…allie just didnt bother with it, and proclaimed, ” i dont know what all this hype about the bagel shop is”..amazing…a man amonst men. with a good knowledge of vintage yanky engines and one of the best lines of the trip, a stand out player.

ADRIAN LOPEZ.
lopes is a seasoned vet of the tour/trip/demo life.for instance, he knows when to rest and to stay away from the bar to have his legs ready for the next day to handle his business his way, sometimes by himself . but knows when to enjoy himself also. often quiet and reserved , he often leaves the main group at the main spot to see if theres anything in the vacinity to his liking as a possible alturnative for his skateboard to be rode upon that day , or a few days later maybe.
in conversation lopes is knowlegable about many things , and can give you the run down on anything from under that low peak of his mesh hat.
he also has an amazing collection of personally customized t shirts…my favorite is the yellow one with skull/stencils on it he always wears. true ripper, nice one lopes.

TOMMY SANDOVAL.
where i come from in the northern part of england there is a saying that has done the rounds for a while now ; BEAST ! it can be attributed to many things, all positive , and this saying and discription i find truly describes tommy gunz.
his approach to life is full commitment. it may sound corny , but all the things tommy has learned on how to approach his skating i.e 110% commitment and focus, he just applies this to life outside of skating to.
a classic was when fs 180ing “that” double set third go , he proclaimed that his life was to ” wake up , and get tricks”(a mantra and qoute rattray and bobier took on until the end of the trip) . he then went to the store and bought a beer the size of a bottle of wine and pounded it. he attacked that beer like he attacked that fs 180. balls to the wall.
everyday tommy would come through on the footage and photos like it was nothing, super gnarly kid and all round nutter. top bloke to.

JOHN RATTRAY.
as i mentioned before as one of my near countrymen , i have known this rattray character for a long time now. his skill on a skateboard is amazing obviously as you will well know, but his razor sharp wit is another.he always amazes me on the bredth of subject matter he knows facts and imformation on, with a well rounded view on many things and a great out look on skateboarding and the side of the fence he stands as a profesional.
on all the trips with zero/mystery i have had the pleasure of atending, i usually end up rooming with john at some point. we usually put the world to rights at some time in the late hours of the evening over a beer, and he ends up trying to think up ways of stopping me snoring when i fall asleep early and i keep him awake. and through the day we try and pick up as many “new jokes” as we can. on this trip it was from a magazine article, a special magazine article. oh we laughed.
our partner in crime on trying to find new places to eat in the evenings and creating “new jokes” was;

RYAN BOBIER.
i had never met bobier before , but he did not dissapoint with his easy to get along with style of life approach plus up for getting in on trying to make up “new jokes” made him a winner. on the first day of our lyon ramble he got one of the best things done , i think , on the entire trip. the afforementioned mayday/5.0 switch crooks on the white banks….so sick.he continued to shred, despite his broken wrist that plagued him some what for the rest of our time in lyon after a hefty slam trying to fs flip into a steep bank seshing with lopes tommy.
bobier is a young lad of californian roots , but his mind is that of someone who wants to see more of the world. and is more than excepting and up for new experiences, foods , and cultures than most.
bobier is an all round ripper not to be pigeon holed , and wants it. good lad material people, good lad material.

GARRETT HILL
garrett got one of the most shocking tricks of our renegade baraka on french soil in my eyes. it was committed to film and video by the artists and we did laugh in shocked-ness of its harlarity and the ease in which he managed to do it. this being the kick flip 5050 grind outside the museum whence geoffrey of my native country once ground the length of in the almighty flip video a while back.this spot was so fun for us all, as it was down the road from our second hotel and we all had a right muck about drop in manualing it to 5.0 grind etc. aka a mega laugh.
anyway , back to garrett who is one talented and wise young man. it was his first time out of the states and he took to it with ease and got involved , like bobier, in all things french.
he bought red and white wine for his close friends in the states and a massive gandalf lord of the rings figure for himself. hold on , thats not french?

THE ARTISTS.
the artists are the un-sung hero of the skateboard tour/trip. they diligently toil in the preverbiable muck and gutter dirt to bring to you the masses the talent that the skateboard world has to offer. unquestioning and forward thinking these men tend to be , and non more so than the artists known as matt winterberg and joey shigeo.
matt is a home grown california lad with a taste for burgers and pizza, but under this junk fueled exterior is a man built to gain experience from life , off and on his skateboard. whem matt skates a whole opens in the sky and you dare not look at times. believe me. blind fold fingerflip boardslide a handrail? yep.
joey meanwhile is as solid as a rock, the right man to have in any urban skateboard nightmare environment. a descision maker ande trip) . he then went to the store and bought a beer the size of a bottle of wine and pounded it. he attacked that beer like he attacked that fs 180. balls to the wall.

joey meanwhile is as solid as a rock, the right man to have in any urban skateboard nightmare environment. a descision maker and maker of dreams. a creative man , but with goals and furver. joey is as friendly as the day is long and a hard worker with the eye of the tiger..get the picture?
the two artists from the french side of things were cedric one the filmer who drove like a man posessed the first few days before his un timely departure, as most of the dudes had met him on a previous trip he got on with eveyone like a house on fire . as did cedric two the master crafts men from sugar mag who had spots for us and was down to shoot non stop from the get go , good lads are ye!
