The West 49 Canadian Open, one of the stops on the World Skateboarding Tour, will return to the Greater Toronto Area on October 2-3, 2004, bringing the world’s top street and vert skaters to Mississauga’s Hershey Arena to compete for over $70,000 in cash (USD).
The annual event, now in its third year, features two days of the world’s best pro skaters showing off their skills on different courses, including the Billabong Street Course Competition, the Garnier Fructis Style Vert Ramp Competition and the Switch Beverage Street/Vert Best Trick Competition. Returning this year as well is the Muskoka Woods outdoor public skate park. Kicking off the event will be the DC Shoes Launch Party Concerts in dowtown Toronto of Friday, October 1st , and the DC Shoes Video Premiere at the Hershey Centre on October 2, 2004.
Tickets for the event go on sale tomorrow (July 1) through all West 49 locations in Ontario, and on August 1 tickets will be available at TicketMaster.
Many of the world’s top X-Games stars have been invited to participate in the 2004 West 49 Canadian Open including Pierre-Luc Gagnon, Buckey Lasek, Shaun White, Ryan Sheckler, Sandros Dias, Vanessa Torres and more than 140 other of the biggest names in the sport.
New to this year’s event, organizers have sweetened the pot to include a $20,000 USD cash purse for a “West 49 Battle of the Brands, with all brands in each of the five categories — decks, shoes, clothing, trucks and wheels — eligible to win by just ensuring their athletes are registered in the contest. Results will be calculated by the combined final results points of the top two street results and top vert result of a sponsored athlete of a brand. Prize money will then be awarded to the team manager of each winning brand.
Five categories have been set — Decks, Shoes, Clothing, Trucks, Wheels – with all brands in each category eligible to win by just ensuring their athletes are registered in the contest. Results will be calculated by the combined final results points (WCS8 point system used) of the top two street results and top vert result (maximum 3 results total) of a sponsored athlete of a brand. Prize money then will be awarded to the team manager of each winning brand.
