Gatorade Welcomes Chaz Ortiz to the Team

CHICAGO, January 5, 2009 – The Gatorade Company, a division of PepsiCo, announced today the addition of 14-year-old skateboarder Chaz Ortiz to its elite team roster. This is Ortiz’s first beverage sponsorship deal.

“The support from Gatorade means a lot to me and I think it’s important for skateboarding too,” said Ortiz.  “It’s a sweaty sport, and if you want to stay out there and keep skating, you have to be hydrated so it just makes sense for Gatorade to support skaters.”
Ortiz is one of the top young up-and-comers and took home several big wins in 2008, including the overall 2008 Dew Tour title in Skate Park, edging out three-time reigning champ Ryan Sheckler.

In addition to working with action sports athletes like Ortiz, snowboarder Ellery Hollingsworth, and BMX rider Nigel Sylvester, Gatorade also has plans to support professional and amateur action sports events in 2009 and will do more with parks and in films as well.

“We’re excited to take our presence in action sports to the next level,” said Kenny Mitchell, action sports team manager with Gatorade.  “Many skaters are using our products already because they know Gatorade is what you reach for when you want to stay hydrated and fueled so you can session longer.  We think tapping into this interest is a very authentic move for us as a brand.”

Sorry, but this just doesn’t seem right, kid rips, but Gatorade just doesn’t seem like it should be in skateboarding

  • Zorb Says:

Once again Chaz comes through with sponsorship news that’s less interesting than Choppy Omega being sponsored by Lunchables. It would be nice if deals like this could go to people who are much better and more interesting, but I guess not everyone has an agent, coach-dad, and marketing machine to assist them.

  • rip pimp c Says:

its all about the beer sponsers

  • Chi-Town Says:

You’re all haters! Not sure how many of you saw the latest Gatorade commercial but the fact that Chaz is right next to Muhammad Ali is amazing and truly groundbreaking for our sport.

Any skater would have taken that deal… Appreciate don’t Hate!

  • Anonymous Says:

jesus what happended to us gatorade as a sponsor thats so rats its really important that skaters stay hydrated when there out there exercising . . .

  • Zorb Says:

I’ll tell you exactly why him standing next to Muhammad Ali in that commercial is HORRIBLE for skateboarding:

Gatorade typically chooses those who are legends in their sport: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and the aforementioned Muhammad Ali. Those are people who are winners, and completely dominating forces who will be discussed within the context of their sport for the rest of human existence. Someone does not achieve that level of legend status in skateboarding by just winning contests, no matter how dominant they are/were.

By aligning him with these top-level legends of other sports, Gatorade is suggesting to the average non-skateboarder that Chaz is of a similar status within skateboarding. The last thing that skateboarding needs is to be misrepresented like that. If you don’t understand that the Michael Jordan-level legends of skateboarding were not made by winning contests, then I suggest you barricade yourself inside your nearest Zumiez location and do everything you can to remain in there forever. It should be a comforting nest for someone who prefers to turn off their brain and repeat meaningless phrases about “haters” when confronted with any sort of logical reasoning.

In 20 years, everyone will remember Michael Jordan, but in 20 years will the majority of skateboarders remember Chaz Ortiz or Mark Gonzales? Our legends don’t need to be disrespected like this. Thanks a lot Gatorade.

i thought i was going to get rick rolled when i clicked the link. Gatorade come on now.

  • Kate Says:

This guy is becoming huge. He killed sheckler in AST which at 14 is sick. This kid is the next big thing

  • jerry Says:

gatorade is milking skateboarding. it will never have a place in the sport. this kid is sick but definitely sold out. i say “woooooomp”

  • CODYskinner Says:

why is gatorade a big mistake? are you reping a different multimillion dollar drink co. for skaters are do you just hate all the time.

  • Mike Says:

Looks like a lot of y’all are drinking HATERADE. Let the kid get his. Shut the hell up and go skate.

  • Chi-Town Says:

    Good call Mike!

Someone earlier mentioned this is HORRIBLE for Skateboarding… come on Get a Grip. Gatorade doesn’t just represent legends unless you are calling Jeter, D Wade, and Manning are all legends as well… no chance/not yet at least!

Gatorade has a tendency to align themselves with athletes that resonate best with their core target or in this case with Chaz trying to connect with a much younger demographic to build brand loyalty.

At the end of the day they are trying to move product! Nice to see an isotonic drink vs. Energy Drinks every minute!

  • Anonymous Says:

Gatorade aligns themselves with sports legends and athletes.
    Skateboarding is not a sport.
    Skateboarders are not athletes.
    Get it right.

No matter how good Chaz Ortiz is or will be, he just lost the respect of pro and ametuers across the globe.

Money is one thing, but soul is another.

  • andrew pandy Says:

I don’t understand why being sponsored by Gatorade is “selling out.” He gets gatorade for free, now, maybe he’ll use that money for something beneficial. If you get a sponsor from Apple computers, would you turn it down if it meant you got all your tech gear for free? That’d be thousands of dollars. Skateboarding, as a skill and talent, is to some degree promoted to earn the individual respect; why would you lock yourself in the closet and not accept deals like that?

I haven’t heard one person get upset at Rob Dyrdek because he’s sponsored by Red Bull, and that’s an energy drink–it’s not even healthy to drink those while skateboarding. So what changed? And the Dew Tour? Totally sponsored by… *drum roll* …Mountain Dew! But no one got mad that they did the events. If companies want to support skateboarding, that’s fine by me.

  • Anonymous Says:

get on that Gatorade and off of that hatorade.

I see nothing wrong with a corporate giant helping out with the skate scene. Do you guys want skateboarding to become rollerblading, Underground, washed up, disrespected, and basically a joke? The way I see the more media the better, because that’s what sport like skateboarding deserves. And if its wrong for a talented young man like Chazz to be a part of something like this; I don’t want to be right.

  • ctams333 Says:

I’m sure kick front feebling the rail at the skatepark training all day for the next championships can work up a mean sweat.

  • Mr. Muller Says:

Chaz and Mark Ortiz, I could not be happier for you. We’ve know you for a long time and you are both true people and good friends. I wish we could see more of each other but you’re always out tearing up the skate parks!!! I’d love to catch up with you sometime soon.

Chaz, it’s been a great watching you grow up and skate so hard. Watching you focus and work hard makes me smile.

I wish more skaters had Dad’s who just love to watch thier own kid skate. That’s so cool.

  • james strain Says:

i think that this is a great oppretunity for him

he did so well on the dew tour

and gatorade is pretty good anyway

  • seth ceely Says:

that sick i would accept free gatorade i drink it anyway when im skating, but gatorade sponsor is kinda whack, but no wacker than any energy drink sponsor, or clothes sponsor really, or nike sb sponsor you know what i mean yo

  • Anonymous Says:

True dat. Unfortunately for Chaz the bigger he gets, the more hate which is only disguised jealousy!

  • thekrew Says:

the man is getting paid and sherding cant go wrong with that

  • seriously Says:

who cares about the AST Dew Tour?
that is the lamest thing in skateboarding next to the xgames.
The crowd is full of a bunch of screaming 12 year old girls and decked out pac sun reppers rocking their dc courts.
Skateboarding isnt about contests, if it was it would be a sport, and last time i checked i dont see anybody in a league or having a coach or a trainer and i sure hope i never see that. Skateboarding should be about having a good time and doing things on your own.

  • Anonymous Says:

couldnt agree more. but i dont believe any skateboarding should be sponsored by gatorade.

  • Franko Says:

Sad to see people are trying to logically explain their reason for just straight up being so ignorant yet envious of this kid. This kid skates hard and it shows and he gets blessed with a sponsor like Gatorade and the kid is selling out? Cmon..I bet if Monster Energy drink sponsored him no one would be saying jack sh*t! Just like someone above mentioned Gatorade doesn’t exclusively cater just to “legends” in the usual sports, they are trying to expand their market..they are doing this by taking the first step and signing an up and coming star..but im sure we are going to get more “logical explanations” as to why he “sold out” haha..makes you wonder why even bother drawing up an argument to some of these responses but i was bored! lol..good nite!

  • Mike Says:

Gotta say congrats to Chazz he has worked hard for what he’s got. He is a kid with a passion and he has a dad that he is tight with. He is fortunate his Dad supports him the way he has. I have hung out with both of them at different contests and I can tell you there good people. Good on ya Chazz and good job Mark, for steppin up to the plate, supporting your sons passions, and giving giving him every opportunity possible to see that his dreams come true. Stay gold eh!

  • C-Mac Says:

man imagine this, “gatorade, fully quenched. featuring Chad ortiz, …”
    the next big video!
nah just jk, I’m glad for the kid, even if theres a main stream side of skateboarding, we will always be on the pure side, just skate for the reason you want to skate for,
main stream wil not stab you in the back while walking home will it?

  • SkATeSOn Says:

dude wut the heck…hes making the biggest mistake anyone could make…GATORADE? ugh duh dude get sponsored by mountain dew or monster…not gatorade…congrats though chaz

  • P.J. Says:

getting a clothing sponsor really isn’t wack at all actually, neither is nike sb.
nike sb isn’t the best, but its still tight
and as for energy drink sponsors: they suck. i wouldn’t want one, even if i had the opportunity. i prefer water.

  • vnasty Says:

he schold be like dan plunnket and get charleston brewery to sponser him ….. now thats a drink sponser if ive ever seen one

  • Sk8DontH8 Says:

Jeeeeze. Haters Haters haters. At least he as a sponsor

  • J.L.C Says:

I can believe you guys have a problem with chaz being payed. I for one wish I would have used gatorade in my early years of skateboarding, instead of hamburgers, and soda when I stopped a long session. Gatorade rules you haters out there!!. I have the flu right now and Gatorade has kept me going strong!!!. I’m on my 3rd gallon. The energy drinks I have used only when I did’nt get enough sleep so I could work my job, and I felt like hell when it wore off!. Gatorade always does me right!!!. More power to chaz, but I did see the comercial at work and i did not know who he was. I herd of him, but I’m mostly into the old school any way. But now I will give him his props!. More power to you chaz!!!.

  • J.L.C Says:
