San Diego’s best converge to raise money for slain skater’s family.
San Diego skaters and about 1,000 spectators came together to offer their support and condolences to the family of Raymond Lang, the seventeen-year-old honor student who was shot and killed by a neighbor in front of his San Diego home a few weeks ago.
As a show of support and a statement against such senseless violence, Osiris Shoes, Republic Skateboards, and the Mission Valley YMCA Skatepark organized the demo and sold raffle tickets to raise money for Lang’s funeral. About 30 companies donated prizes, and the event raised a total of 4,500 dollars through raffle-ticket sales and donations. The Tony Hawk Foundation also made a separate donation to the fund.
Most of the action was focused on the vert ramp, where several San Diego-based pros were skating throughout the cool, sunny afternoon: Tony Hawk, Buster Halterman, Colin McKay, Bob Burnquist, Peter Hewitt, Tony Magnusson, Jesse Fritsch, Andy Macdonald, Matt Moffett, Kevin Staab, Bucky Lasek, Brian Howard, and many others. The pros also took time to sign autographs and chat while local bands provided interludes between raffles.
Lang was shot in his driveway in November by a neighbor who was angry that Lang and others had been skating in the street near the neighbor’s car. The suspect is being held without bail as he awaits trial.
