The first-ever LG Action Sports Championships, set to take place November 15-23, 2003 at Fairplex in Pomona (home to the Los Angeles County Fair), is expected to draw the biggest names in skateboarding with the US Skateboarding Championships. In addition, live, on-stage performances from twelve bands (including Simple Plan), exhibits from leading action sports manufacturers showcasing the latest products, break dancing competitions, graffiti art competitions, a public skatepark and athlete autograph signings will make the Championships the most thrilling and unique event of the season.
More than 200 of the world’s best action sports athletes, including names like Chad Muska, Eric Koston, Mark Appleyard, Tony Trujillo, Chris Senn, Ryan Sheckler, Rune Glifberg and Bucky Lasek, are expected to compete on custom built ramps and courses for the title of U.S. Champion. More than $650,000 in cash and prizes will be offered, making the LG Action Sports Championships the largest per discipline prize purse in action sports history.
The LG Action Sports Championships merges together four of the industry’s biggest competitions under one large-scale umbrella event: the U.S. Skateboarding Championships, the U.S. Championships of BMX, the ASA World Championships and the World Championships of Freestyle Motocross. Each sport will run its season-ending Championships over an exclusive two-day period so that each sport gets its own “time in the sun and the athletes are not forced to share the ramps, practice time, TV exposure and crowds.
“There’s never been an event like this in action sports history, said Rick Bratman, president of ASA Events, producer of the LG Action Sports Championships. “Not only are we providing the biggest prize purse these riders have ever seen, but we also allowed the athletes themselves to design virtually all aspects of the event, including the courses, prize money breakdown, competition formats and qualifying criteria. Bratman added, “We worked hard to develop a fun event for the athletes, the action sportsindustry and the fans so that we can celebrate the incredible people that have turned action sports into a global phenomenon.

‘The Yard’ is an urban culture zone that features the fundamentals and lifestyles of the original American hip-hop culture via a series of contests. ‘The Yard’ competitions include the U.S. Championships of: Breakdancing, Streetnastics, Popping, Deejay Battling and Graffiti Contest. ‘The Yard’ will also feature special appearances by The Beat Junkies, world renown turntablists, Stash, one of L.A.’s most respected graffiti writers, Mr. Wiggles, the world’s greatest popper, and several of L.A.’s most revered b-boy crews including Stylelements, Air Force Crew and the L.A. Breakers.
The Breakdancing Battle will be a 3 on 3 competition, drawing the world’s most renowned best b-boys and b-girls, and will be judged by the Rocksteady crew’s Mr. Wiggles, one of the most respected and revered popper’s in the history of the artform.
The Streetnastics Competition will allow b-boys to wow the crowd with their innovative flips and twists. The event will isolate the b-boy moves that crossover the best and provide a forum for these urban acrobats to go off in a slightly different format.
While guys love the testosterone-enhanced nature of breakdancing with its amazing feats of athleticism, women find the rhythmic movements and flow of the dancers particularly fascinating. Mr. Wiggles will again lend his expertise to judge this event as well.
The Deejay Battle will be a head-to-head style battle where DMC and ITF circuit deejays will face off against one another. In the head-to-head style, routines are shorter, but the artists will be given opportunities to retaliate against the competition.
The best graffiti artists will be given a 40′ wall to bomb. Audiences will then be able to see unique styles and colors spring to life in vivid graffiti murals. True to hip-hop culture, this event will be participatory as the audience votes on which piece should win.
The ‘Festival Village’ includes video games, action sports video premieres, Internet stations, pro athlete autograph signings, an industry expo where leading manufacturers will be showcasing the latest action sports products, and an open skatepark where action sports enthusiasts can skate the same course used by the professional athletes.
