“Everything about the Skate Plaza has turned out to be more of a project than I ever fathomed – from the concept, to the design, construction and the grand opening, said Rob. “And I think we have managed to capture this all with Groundbreaking. Our mission with this video is to show this experience and this concept not only as a great video to watch, but as a tool that others can take and use to help create a plaza in their own city.
A feature of the documentary will be the Grand Opening of The Rob Dyrdek/DC Shoes Skate Plaza in Kettering, Ohio June 11, 2005. The Grand Opening played host to a number of the world’s top pros who turned out in force for The Red Bull Hammers vs. Bangers Skate Plaza Contest. Eric Koston, Chris Cole, Ryan Sheckler, Tommy Sandoval, Caine Gayle, Stefan Janoski, Greg Lutzka, Evan Hernandez, Darrell Stanton, Terell Robinson, and Josh Kalis were among the many skateboarders who appeared in Kettering to take a shot at the $50,000 prize purse. The grand opening was nearly three years in the making and all the action from Dyrdek’s opening speech to Chris Cole’s attack on the 12-stair is captured in this 30 minute DVD.
But Groundbreaking is meant to be more than just an amazing skate video. It will serve as a resource to help build Skate Plazas, and is envisioned to be a tool for skateboarders—as such, it will retail for $3.95 in order to be available to as many people as possible. In addition, a portion of the profits from the DVD sale will be donated to the Skate Plaza Foundation to help in efforts.
Bonus features on the DVD will explain how to best work with communities to get a Skate Plaza built, and there will be a technical segment for park designers, architects and contractors that explains size, spacing and other construction issues.
