Hometown Rising, an 11-stop amateur skateboarding contest series, will begin its quest to elevate the level of skateboarding in the central U.S. on June 1 in Waveland, Miss. The Tour, backed by Da Kine, Smith, Globe and Volcom, will feature ten qualifying contests leading up to the finals June 29 at Southside Skatepark in Houston, Texas.
“It’s a great feeling to be bringing a competition of this level to many of the parks on our tour for the first time ever,” said tour organizer, Mike Aho. “With sponsors like Da Kine, Globe, Smith and Volcom, we’ve got top-notch backing, but unlike other contests, our goal is to remain a grassroots event.”
In addition to the tour, Hometown Rising will be showcased in a video, which will feature not only contest footage, but some of the tour stops’ best kept local secrets. Two filmers will travel with the tour to film the competitions and sessions at local skaters favorite spots in each market. Other filmers are welcome to submit their footage by August 15, 2002 for consideration as well.
Contests will feature four categories, including Under 11, 12 – 15, 16 and Over, and Sponsored. All qualifying stops will have a $25 entry fee, while the finals fee will be $20. Winners will receive prize packs including merchandise from Da Kine, Globe, Smith, Volcom and others. Skaters under 18 must have a waiver signed by legal guardian in the presence of Hometown Rising staff or notarized. For tour dates and more information, please visit www.hometownrising.com.
