The University Of Denver School Of Art And Art Historyhas been busy collecting skateboard decks for an exhibition planned for 2000. The Boardrider Project Millennium Retrospectivewill showcase the depth of talent and scope of influence that skateboarding artists have had on American culture. In May, Vancouverites Rick McCrank, Jody Morris, and Sam Gabay teamed up to launch Momentum, a wheel and accessories company from just north of the border. The three partners decided that there’s no reason why all skateboard companies have to be from California, so they started Momentum as a Canadian alternative. The premiere line consists of six wheels, from 54 to 60mm, ridden by team members McCrank, Sluggo, Moses Itkonen, and am Keegan Sander. Pro-model wheels are in the works, although the company has no intention of making boards. There are enough companies doing that, they say.

After signing a shoe deal with Adio(see story on page 23), Tony Hawkcompleted his updated look with a new clothing sponsor, Italian fashion-gurus Diesel. Hawk and teammates Adil Dyaniand Mathias Ringstromwill be traveling to the company’s headquarters in Europe twice annually to aid in the design of skateable casual wear.

Meanwhile, the Hawk family have introduced a line of children’s clothing under the Hawk Clothingbrand. The company was founded late last year to fill what they see as a void in the youth-apparel market. Hawk Clothing will combine skate styles with comfortable and durable fabrics for the line of skate wear that will include pants, shorts, shirts, fleecewear, outerwear, beanies, and accessories. With all the attention Rookieskateboards gets for being the first female-owned skateboard company, many people are unaware that they sponsor guys. Jason Dill has been abducted by the Alien Workshop. He currently has two models available: a limited Dill abduction deck and an EXP construction deck. Along with Dill, L.A. amateur Anthony Van Engelen has joined the sect. The entire Workshop team has been filming for a full-length video to be released by November 1998.

In conjunction with Kareem Campbell, Guy Mariano, Rob Dyrdek, and Colin McKay, Alien Workshop will oversee and distribute REFLEX performance bearings. This will be done under the umbrella titled DNA Distribution.

Clockwork has added a few folks to its team, including Norwegian Christian Brox, whose pro model is now available. Originally part of the Clockwork team back in 1989, Brox is happy to be part of the CW family again. Other new team members include Jason Odell and child prodigy Ryan Sheckler. Kung Fu griptape and Clockwork wheels (available in four sizes) are the latest product additions.

The Expedition One team, featuring Alphonzo Rawls, Richard Angelides, Chris Lambert, and Chany Jeanguenin, is touring Europe for five weeks, visiting such countries as the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Germany, Holland, and Denmark. All the events will be documented through the lens of filmer Lee Dupont for the soon-to-be-released Expedition One video.

Imperial Distribution and Kien Lieu‘s new company Dynasty (featuring Kien, Jon Reeves, Vinny Ponte, and Steve Nardone) will be doing a series of audio mix tapes that will be distributed through Imperial. The Silverstar and Capital summer tour went well, with videographer Andre Atringer and photographer Mike O’Meally documenting Ricky Oyola, Sergei Trudnowski, Andrew Currie, Greg Harris, Jacob Rupp, Jesse Fritsch, Kevin Taylor, Jim Menscer, and A.J. Mazzu so everyone can see what they did on the trip. Look for the First Division Wheels video at the upcoming ASR Trade Expo – it should include footage from the tour.
