Monday Madness (8-30)

Young Gun Joey Poiriez got into a bit of a hairball incident recently. He was down in Chula Vista picking up homie Lenny Rivas to go skate when a sketchy man jumped into Joey’s car, forced him out and took off, effectively car-jacking him! Right in front of Lenny’s house! Carjacking, who still does that? Karma reigned as the assailant crashed Joey’s Civic a few blocks away and was apprehended by the po-po. Joey’s car was totalled but the perpetrator is now serving hard time. Hopefully Joey gets a good insurance settlement.

Tony Hawk accepted the award for Best Video Game Soundtrack for Tony Hawk Underground at the VMAs last night. Bam also accepted the award for reasons unknown. TK seen shirtless on the red carpet, but that’s it. Tony cracked his board on a frontside disaster upon presenting some other award. Mase really is officially back and he still sounds like Kareem Campbell. P. Diddy really did run a mohawk—again.

Skaters for Portland Skateparks Accepts $75,000 Challenge Grant from NikeGO for the Rebuilding of Portland SkateparkThe Grant Marks the Mid-Point of the Organization’s Efforts to Raise $150,000 in Private Funds to Support the Growth of Skateboarding in the Rose City with a World-Class Skatepark Facility

Skaters for Portland Skateparks (SPS) today announced that it has accepted a $75,000 challenge grant from NikeGO to be used towards the redevelopment of North Portland’s Pier Park. This announcement represents a fundraising campaign that is now entering its final phase to reach the $150,000 needed by the end of the year. Pier Park will serve as a model for future skateparks citywide, while helping to meet the needs of skaters currently.

“The funding from NikeGO and the support of Skaters for Portland Skateparks will help leverage funds set aside from the Parks Levy and bring us closer to our goal of building a network of skateparks throughout the city, said City Commissioner Jim Francesconi. “This is a premier example of public-private partnership making Portland a better place to live, work, and play.

Pier Park’s skateboard park in the St. John’s neighborhood of North Portland is the city’s only publicly supported skatepark. The park is heavily used and is a great community asset but the design of the skatepark is obsolete and the park is structurally flawed and unsafe. To address the shortage Portland Parks & Recreation has established a skatepark advisory committee, which last December identified a need for approximately 10-15 skateparks citywide. Pier Park’s redevelopment, with an expected opening date of Summer 2005, will not only give a much needed facelift to the existing structure in St. John’s, but will initiate the network of skateparks needed in Portland.

Skaters for Portland Skatepks (SPS), whose leadership is comprised of veteran skaters, has worked successfully to obtain support from the Portland Police Bureau and St. John’s Neighborhood Association in addition to Portland Parks & Recreation for a proposed skatepark redevelopment. SPS has contracted with the world’s leading skatepark development firm, Oregon’s Dreamland Skateparks, LLC (Dreamland), to have Dreamland redevelop the skatepark at cost, in service to Portland’s skate community.

“NikeGO is proud to be a supporter of Skaters for Portland Skateparks and the Pier Park Project, said Sandy Bodecker, Vice President of Nike Skateboarding. “Through this donation, we hope to inspire kids to enjoy the benefits of a physically active lifestyle with a world-class skateboarding facility that’s unlike anything in Portland today.

When completed, the proposed $150,000 redevelopment will offer skaters the very latest in design, divided evenly between transition and street elements to provide an ideal skatepark environment. The park will include a safe and convenient spectator area, improved walkways and amenities, and year-round recreational benefit with the potential addition of a roof and lights.

Additional contributions to the SPS campaign to renovate the Pier Park Skatepark have been made by: Richard Jones Design —($2300), St. John’s Neighborhood Association — ($1000) and Butch Bannon/Hammersurf — ($1000).To complete the fundraising and send the project into construction, SPS is actively seeking donations and in-kind contributions of concrete, rebar, and metal roofing and lighting materials. Please contact Skaters for Portland Skateparks at pdxskaters@hotmail.com or by mailing a contribution directly to P.O. Box 40736Portland, Oregon 97240-0736.
