WEST 49 CANADIAN OPEN FEATURING THE “BATTLE OF THE BRANDS RETURNS WITH ALL-NEW FORMATS AND HUGE NEW COURSE DESIGN!
The 4th annual West 49 Canadian Open returns to the Toronto area on September 30-October 2, 2005 bringing the world’s top skaters to compete for $75,000USD cash. A Friday “Open Qualifier will see 10 skaters advance to the main event: The Battle Of The Brands competition where 72 total athletes will compete over the weekend for individual prize money and points that will ultimately determine which are the best skate industry teams and who gets to take home a piece of $20,000USD in five categories: Decks, Shoes, Apparel, Trucks, Wheels. “The skate industry has done a phenomenal job of growing brands that the audience follows loyally, explains Sam Biao, President of West 49.This team format further supports the growth and recognition of all brands that have helped build the industry. We saw great success in the launch of this concept last year and have now focused the entire structure of the event around the team format with prize money that also pays out a share for the team managers who attend. World Cup Skateboarding and event organizers from IMG have structured a new competition format that will see a series of high-energy heats of 15-minutes duration with 5 riders at a time competing on course and the top two ranked skaters advancing from each heat. Also new for 2005 is a huge custom Billabong Street Course designed by Montreal’s Spinworks that is expanded over the entire floor of the Hershey Center and will feature a massive roll-in to launch-box to quarter-pipe that will host Best Trick and Highest Air contests. A Pro-Invitational Rail Rumble event has been added to the Friday night line-up where 4 skaters from Team Canada will do battle with 4 skaters from a World Team for $5,000. Side events like the DC Shoes Video Release: Groundbreaking on Saturday Night and on Thursday September 29, the DC Shoes Launch Concert in Downtown Toronto will round out the weekend of non-stop action. Organizers encourage all team managers and athletes to ensure they are registered by going to www.canadianopen.com. Skate fans are encouraged to get their early-bird tickets and save $13.50 at West 49 locations in Ontario prior to general ticket sales going on-sale at Ticketmaster August 1.
