Huntington Beach, Calif.–March 8, 2000–Robert B. McKnight Jr., chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Quiksilver Inc. (NYSE:ZQK), today announced that Quiksilver has acquired Hawk Designs Inc., maker of signature skateboard apparel bearing the name of Tony Hawk, the world’s most famous skateboarder.
“It’s a natural fit,” said Danny Kwock, Quiksilver’s executive vice president of core marketing and emerging businesses. “Quiksilver has been looking for the proper way to enter the skate market for years, and now we have the perfect vehicle.”
Hawk, widely regarded as the icon of skateboarding, is the first “alternative” athlete to receive widespread mainstream recognition. The 12-time world champion recently won an ESPY Award, the only alternative athlete to receive such an honor. He has won six gold medals on ESPN’s X Games, his famous “900” degree spin move won the Best Trick Award at the 1999 MTV Sports and Music Festival, and he has invented more tricks than any skateboarder in history.
Hawk is widely exposed in the national media, including the “got milk?” and Disney campaigns.
In addition to buying the clothing company, Quiksilver will also sponsor Hawk as an athlete and spokesperson.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
