The first-ever scholarship fund aimed at skateboarders has been created. In memory of fifteen-year-old honor student, devoted skateboarder, and Love Park activist Patrick Kerr, the Patrick Kerr Scholarship Fund will grant four scholarships-one 5,000-dollar and three 1,000-dollar awards.
To apply, students must answer the essay question, “How has skateboarding been a positive influence in your life?” The scholarship’s open to high school seniors who’ve been accepted to a two- or four-year accredited college or technical school. Special consideration will be given to those applicants who’ve been actively involved in the development of a community skatepark. The application deadline is April 20, 2003, so act fast.
The board of directors include Edmond Bacon (Love Park designer and father of actor Kevin Bacon), Tony Hawk, Jen O’Brien, Ricky Oyola, Gary Ream (director of Woodward Camp), Mike Vallely, Jack Wienert (executive director of ESPN’s X-Games), Heidi Lemmon (director of nonprofit Skatepark Association of USA), Judge Seamus McCaffery (Philadelphia Municipal Court), and honorary board member Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell. For more information, go to skateboardscholarship.org or patrickkerrskateboardscholarship.org.
