What do The Hunns, skateboarding, and a fire breathing woman all have in common? If you were lucky enough to procure a coveted invitation to attend TransWorld Skateboarding’s Twenty Year Anniversary party on Friday, you would already know.
Despite the uninvited torrential downpour that went on all night, the invite-only party at the Vans Skatepark in Orange, CA brought together past and present TransWorld employees, professional skaters, industry heads, plenty of free drinks and punk rock.
While guests like Tony Alva, Brian Patch, Lance Mountain, Ed Templeton and Geoff Rowley skated the combi pool and the street course, the rest of the guests mingled upstairs and sipped on cocktails courtesy of Grey Goose Vodka, Jagermeister, Red Bull, and the Alcatraz Brewing Company. For those who came for a slice of TransWorld Skateboarding history, Grant Brittain put together a slide show commemorating the past twenty years of skateboarding including photos from such influential skateboarding photographers as Atiba Jefferson, Jon Humpries, and James Cassimus.
For many, the highlight of the rain-soaked evening was the music. Each band tore it up with a different sound beginning with Steve Alba’s band Powerflex 5. For never having practiced together, they sounded damn good. On next was front man Duane Peters and The Hunns, who finished their incredible set in a blaze of glory. Everyone knew the party was on when the female member of The Hunns blew fire into the crowd, energizing bystanders and firing up the City of Orange policemen who could only stand by helplessly watching the entire spectacle. Last but in no way least, Steve Caballero’s band, The Faction, stoked out the people who were still standing, and a guest appearance was made by Lance Mountain’s band Sten Guns. By the end of the night, the boys in blue had the final say, shutting down the party and chasing everyone out of the park, but TransWorld Skateboarding was not to be outdone, coming through with an amazing gift for VIP guests and friends of the magazine; an original first issue to add to their collections.
The TransWorld staff would like to thank Vans, Jagermeister, Grey Goose vodka, Red Bull energy drink, Alcatraz Brewing Company, TGI Fridays, and Cafà‡ Tu Tu Tango.
