World’s Best Skateboarders to Compete in Southern California October 6-8th; Vans to Host Premier Event in the Sport
SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif., — The final stop of Vans Triple Crown of Skateboarding, the Vans/PlayStation(R) World Championships of Skateboarding, is set to explode the weekend of October 6-8, 2000.
Invading the pier in Oceanside, California, this invitation only event promises to showcase top skateboarding talent from around the world including technical street skaters Geoff Rowley (U.K.) and Willy Santos (U.S.A.), halfpipe ruler Bob Burnquist (Brazil), and the legendary Steve Caballero (U.S.A.) to name just a few.
Male and female competitors will battle it out on the 72 foot wide halfpipe, 12,000 square foot street course, and in the 65 foot long “PlayStation(R)2 Soul Bowl”. A staggering $127,500 will be up for grabs on this leg of the tour bringing the overall prize purse for the Vans Triple Crown of Skateboarding to an unprecedented $217,500. Rewards such as these should definitely bring the competition to a fever pitch.
“With $127,500 in prize money, a free Ford Ranger, a trip to Hawaii, and PlayStation 2’s up for grabs, competition will be fierce,” says Steve Van Doren, Vans’ Vice President of Events and Promotions. “Along with the concert and festival area, it should be an amazing finale for the Vans Triple Crown of Skateboarding.”
In addition to the best competitors in the world, the prize purses this year are unparalleled. At the conclusion of this year’s Vans Triple Crown of Skateboarding, the overall men’s champion will receive a brand new 2000 Ford Ranger and a PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system. The overall women’s champion will receive an additional $2,500 as well as an all-expense paid trip to Hawaii. A special points system will equalize the points earned from each discipline, and at the completion of the Vans/PlayStation World Championships of Skateboarding, the winners will be announced.
The Vans Triple Crown of Skateboarding is sanctioned by World Cup Skateboarding and points from each stop of the tour count towards the overall WCS North American rankings and WCS World Rankings.
In addition to the intense competition, the World Championships will be a party atmosphere with attractions for everyone. PlayStation will host the Grind Session(TM) street course where anyone can see for him or herself exactly how challenging skateboarding can be. The Grind Session(TM) street course, consisting of banks, ledges, rails and more, will be open to the public for a nominal fee in order to put his or her own skills to the test. In addition, ska legends The Specials will perform a live concert at 7pm on Saturday evening at the Oceanside Community Center in conjunction with the event.
The first stop of the Vans Triple Crown of Skateboarding, Slam City Jam presented by G-Shock, was held May 5-7th in Vancouver, Canada. The second stop of the Vans Triple Crown of Skateboarding, the Mountain Dew National Championships, was held June 2-4th at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Vans/PlayStation World Championships of Skateboarding is one of twenty-one events in the Vans Triple Crown Series, composed of Triple Crown of Snowboarding, Skateboarding, Surfing, Wakeboarding, Freestyle Motocross, and BMX. Each stop of the Vans Triple Crown Series receives a dedicated one-hour show, airing a minimum of three times on the ESPN networks in over 180 countries to over 200 million households worldwide.
