The third and final stop of the Vans Triple Crown of Skateboarding”, the Xbox World Championships of Skateboarding, arrives at the Oceanside Pier and Amphitheater October 4-7 for the most intense skateboarding competition of the year. An invitation-only event, the culmination of the Vans Triple Crown of Skateboarding will bring together the top competitors from this year’s Vans Triple Crown Series. The event, which is free to the public, will also be broadcast on NBC Sports on December 8 at 5:00 p.m. EST as part of NBC’s ongoing coverage of the Vans Triple Crown Series.
“Vans is excited to bring the Xbox World Championships of Skateboarding to the city of Oceanside,” stated Jay E. Wilson, vice president of global marketing for Vans. “We’re expecting the Core Sports fans of Southern California to really get the joint rockin’ and pump up the athletes as they go for the Vans Triple Crown title. For those who can’t make it to the event, the airing on NBC Sports will ensure that skateboarding fans around the country can catch all the action.”
Skaters who have proved themselves to be the best in the world will come together to compete for an astounding $125,000 in prize money. The confirmed competitors read like a “who’s who” list of skateboarding, and include Geoff Rowley, Andy Macdonald, Willy Santos, Bob Burnquist, Steve Caballero, Kristian Svitak, Eric Koston, and Cara Beth Burnside.
As an added bonus, the Xbox World Championships of Skateboarding will be held concurrently with the Vans Championships of BMX, also in Oceanside, CA, October 4-7. Fans will not only get to see the world’s best skaters, but can also catch sick BMX action from riders such as Dennis McCoy, Tim “Fuzzy” Hall, Cory Nastazio, Dave Mirra and Ryan Nyquist. The Vans Championships of BMX will feature a format that includes events in street, dirt and vert.
The Vans Triple Crown Series began with the Vans Slam City Jam in Vancouver, British Columbia. In the men’s competition, Eric Koston’s solid runs brought him the first place Street title, while Colt Cannon finished second and Vancouver local Rick McCrank came in third. California’s Vanessa Torres took home the women’s first place title in Street and Slam City Jam also saw history-making Vert skating as Brazil’s Bob Burnquist completed a near-perfect run with a score of 99 in the final heat, bringing home a third Vert Championship title. California’s Rune Glifberg and Bucky Lasek of Maryland took second and third place in Vert, respectively.
The second stop of the Vans Triple Crown Series was in Cleveland, Ohio, where Vanessa Torres continued her winning streak, finishing first in the Women’s Street category and edging out Stefanie Thomas, who finished second, and Jessie Van Roechoudt, who placed third. In the men’s Vert category, Rune Glifberg took home the gold, with Andy Macdonald and Pierre Luc-Gagnon close behind, finishing second and third, respectively. Chad Bartie won the Street competition, with Cleveland local boy Kristian Svitak placing second and Pat Channita finishing third.
