Day one of the Vans/PlayStation(R) World Championships of Skateboarding was wet; raining wet. Yes, even in California. A storm that was supposed to peak earlier in the week brought showers to San Diego County Friday morning.

Skaters were able to get in about ten minutes of practice before the rain started falling and it kept misting and raining off and on all day. “The only real events that we’re going to have to reschedule are the men’s under-30 bowl riding and the girls bowl riding,” said Ryan Synder of SNL Communications. “The women’s event was supposed to be from 5 to 6 tonight so we’re hoping it will clear out.”

The few spectators that showed up for some skating were left wandering from pop-up to pop-up looking for shelter and anything that sponsors were giving away. While some people tried sneaking into the VIP area to score free fish tacos from Wahoo’s, most were inside the PlayStation semi trailer playing on one of more than 10 PlayStation game systems that were wired-up and booming.

One rumor at the site was someone was going to close the hatch at the bottom of the bowl and have the Vans/PlayStation World Championship Swim Party. But it never really rained enough to float any pool toys.

Luckily the bowl didn’t get that wet and after a break in the weather after 4:00 o’clock they were able to get the women’s bowl riding contest going on a dry ramp.

Here are the results:

1. Carabeth Burnside $800
2. Jodi Macdonald $500
3. Jen O’brien $300
4. Heidi Fitzgerald $200
5. Kyla Duffy $100
6. Holly Lyons $100
