We still can’t forget this unfortunate incident when a young skater was, in our opinion, extremely mistreated by an overly aggressive (to put it lightly) Baltimore cop. And it’s hard to believe, but that officer is back patrolling the streets. So, check out Zach Stow’s unpleasant (again, to put it lightly) encounter with San Francisco’s Officer Schwab. First thing, why is skateboarding TOTALLY illegal in SF and riding a bike is any better. people that ride bmx are no better than skaters. their pegs do more damage than trucks. automatically skaters are seen as bad people. I do agree that they shouldnt have been pulling up a drain or whatever it was, but the cop had no right at all to kick the skater, or probably even arrest him. he was saying what he thought and theres no law against that. freedom of speech. also if the cop didnt see them skating, what is their offence? does that mean i could be arrested for walking on the sidewalk carrying a skateboard? A verbal warning would be fine. im sure they would have left and that would be that. people need to stop being so stereotypical about skaters. just because the adults rode bikes and not skateboards when they were younger they think skating is horrible. This cop totally crossed the line and should be suspended, or taken off of the police force. (I recently have been sentanced to 20 hours of community service, and four months of probation for skating-"trespassing" in a parking lot where no signs were visible. This was my first offence ever, and not even a verbal warning was issued to us.)

WORD OF ADVICE: keep your mouth shut in the first place, you DONT have to answer those questions he asked at first. the less you say = the less he can discriminate against you for.
if you didnt follow that bit of advice and you end up in a situation like zach did, do EXACTLY what they did, keep their mouths SHUT, (no truck-bashing, killing, etc, etc.) just keep the video camera, document it, file a complaint and get the local media on YOUR side (as long as you didnt threaten the cop, the media will stand on your side).
that is how you can get the officer in a world of shit, probably fired. (also, get the citizens names, theyre on your side in that situation)

That cop actually seemed pretty chill, everything he did was was well within his rights. That kid resisted when he tried to put the handcuffs on, if he had just beat the cop to the handcuff position that cop wouldnt have had to do anything, if they kid didn't resist getting in the car he wouldnt have gotten shoved. If he hadn't called the cop a dick, nothing would have happened. Certainly an unpleasant situation, but you never call a cop a dick when hes letting you off, the cop was right to give everyone a ticket as well. It would have been wrong for him to only cite one person. When a cop says, "I'm going to cut you a break," you shut up, when the cop is screwing you over, that's when you be a dick back.

I wish they had cops like this in Philly, this cop was not out of line and gave the skater respect and it was not returned. He was going to let them go!
If that happened in Philly that kid would have been man handled(tackled an or pushed into the street when traffic was moving), taken to the station ruffed up a little more then thrown in jail and then fined heavily.
This incident isn't anything to get emotional about, the skater was being a bit of a douche. You don't curse at cops for this, and expect them to leave you alone, your asking for it then.
Best bet is be respectful, offer that you didn't mean any harm and that you are on your way. Simple and effective 9 times out of 10 you will be left alone, now he got a night in jail/ a record and most likely a fine and possible community service. Dumb ass!

Dalton, I am going to have disagree with you and assume you are not able to relate to this like the rest of us. The cop made a big deal over nothing, just as cops usually do when it involves skateboarding. I in no way have anything against police officers but do feel that most of them abuse their power and treat skateboarding like it is some activity that is so terrible. I believe some people have a hard time dealing with the fact that no longer are kids just interested in sports such as football and baseball. Skateboarding is just as rewarding as any other sport out there and equally if not more challenging and I just don't think most people see it that way. All a police officer ever has to do is simply tell a person, or a group of people "hey, i really don't care that you are skateboarding, but I just received a call and you guys have to go somewhere else". It's simple, just be cool about it and people will understand that you are just doing your job, its when police officers such as this guy takes it to a whole different level and makes it a bigger deal than it is, most likely because he views skateboarding totally different than how he views more traditional sports such as football and baseball.

The cop was a dick by singling him out, he could of asked if his head hurt, when he said no said okay and nothing more. It may be against the law to skate in SF (Which is crazy enough to begin with) but it's not against the law to voice one's opinion but by the looks of when this officer decided to arrest this kid with a skateboard, it's clear the officer was only arresting this individual because the officer was insulted. The real issue here should be how wrong it is for skateboarding to be illegal in an entire city, especially a place as important historically for skateboarding as SF. The kid shouldn't have called the cop an asshole, but the cop shouldn't of threatened to break his arm either. Its a hard call I mean if you wanna blame whoever "started it" you might say it was the kid but does him saying that allow the cop to obviously overreact by threatening violence i don't think so.
Its a really tough call, if the cop hadn't overreacted it would have been more reasonable for the kid to be taken in, I mean the cops are just trying to do their job in a tough economy, I've had much worse encounters where the cops have threatened to break my board without me even saying anything to them, but still the cop was obviously losing his cool.

I watched this vedio twice and as far as i can tell both sides are at fault. First of all the skater shoundn't have called the cop a dick, for that matter he should have just kept quiet and waited for the incident to pass. talking to a cop like that only exaserbates the situation. Secondly The cop shouldn't have thretened the kid, sure hes an idiot but hes not dangerouse and thats just inappropriate. Secondly the cop made a very unethical decision by deciding to cite all of the skateboarders because the citizens were concerned, he should have accepted the concequences of kicking a defencless kid already in handcuffs he should not have tried to cover his ass by coming down on everyone. In the end I'd say that the kid excersized he's right to free speach by calling the cop a dick but when excersizing that right you have to be prepaired to except the cocequences of using that freedome at such a time. The skater started the misconduct but the officer abused his power. Personally id have kept my mouth shut said "yes sir" and "thank you" and lived to skate another day seems like a small price to pay to be able to skate.

Lesson: when the cop is cutting you a break, and letting you off without a citation, you ought to shut up and get off easy. He was completely in his right to arrest the guy, because he was choosing to let them off without a crime. However, verbal threats are unnecessary, as well as the alleged kicking. I'm also sure the kid was not resisting getting into the car. Have you ever tried to get in a cop car with cuffs? Having your arms bound throws off your balance completely. He deserves to at least get a pay cut, or demotion, or something. But this isn't as bad as some cops…
