when i was young i learned the fine art of carpentry. my first project was to build a chair. while working on this for nearly 4 and a half months i got to contemplate all aspects of this project. why was i working so hard to create something that would enable someone to do nothing? where would this fit in with all the other stuff we had? do i really need to build 3 more? after about 23 splinters and 4 stitches later this project was complete. after a complete inspection by my father it was deemed a reliable piece of furniture. when i asked why i was asked to build a chair instead of something more functional he replied “now i can sit and watch you build you next assingment instead of having to stand the whole time.” for the next 12 to 14 years i worked with him, all the while that chair remained in the wood shop. everytime he needed a break he used that chair. it now sits in my house as a reminder that while most things are to complex to figure out, that chair will allow you to contemplate them a little easier.
