What the Pros Are Rockin’: Kerry Getz

What board are you riding right now?

Laughs If I told the truth, it wouldn’t be good. Kerry Getz Frog board, limited edition.

What do you like most about it?

It’s a pretty good concave. Sometimes I get a flatter one¿I kinda like the flatter ones, so I gotta pick the flattest board out of ’em. But I’m just psyched on the graphic. It’s a super good board. It’s a seven and a half¿good size.

What size boards do you prefer? Is seven and a half pretty normal?

Yeah, seven and a half.

Do you do anything special with your griptape?

I just sheet it over it. No lines, nothing.

Do you grip over the bolts?

What wheels are you riding right now?

Right now, I’m riding Bryan Wenning’s Terratone wheels.

Do you ever try different hardnesses, or do you stick to one in particular?

I have the same hardness all the time¿whatever Alien uses. I’m not really sure. I like a harder wheel.

Do you have a preference for a wheel color?

How often do you set up new wheels?

Probably every two or three days.

How often do you set up a new deck?

Same thing¿two or three days.

What are the smallest wheels you’ve ever ridden?

Probably 37 millimeter.

Little bearing covers.

Yeah, exactly.

What bearings do you ride?

Bones ceramics.

Those are fast.

Yeah, they’re ridiculous.

Do you use any bearing oil or speed cream?

Once in a while I use the speed cream, like if the bearings get dust in them, they kinda bind up or something. I just shoot a little of that speed cream, and it loosens them up.

What trucks do you ride?

Royal trucks.

Is there anything particular you like about those?

Yeah. They’re low, and they turn pretty good. I don’t like a real sharp turn, and they’ve got a longer turn on them. I don’t like quick turns.

Do you ride them loose or tight?

In the middle.

How often do your change your trucks?

Maybe once a month.

Do you use any riser pads?

Are there any rituals you go through when you set up your new board?

Not at all. I’ve just got to hook up stickers in certain ways on the bottom.

So you’ve gotta make sure the sticker job’s done right.

What shoes do you skate in?

I usually skate in the DVS Keenan Miltons¿those are my favorite ones.

What do you think is the most important feature of a shoe?

A flat sole¿a wider shoe. Nothing so skinny that you roll your ankle. I like my laces to be super wide, too. I actually use tongue jacks once in a while. I put them in there to make my shoes wide.

How long does a pair of shoes usually last you?

I’d say probably three or four days.

You go through shoes fast. What size shoe do you wear?

Eight and a half.
