Here’s an updated press release for the West 49 Canadian Open:

The 3rd annual West 49 Canadian Open returns to the Toronto area on October 2-3, 2004 bringing the world’s top street and vert skaters to compete for over $50,000USD cash. Now becoming a “can’t miss event on the World Cup Skateboarding tour, organizers have sweetened the pot to include a $20,000USD cash purse for a “West 49 Battle of the Brands.

Five categories have been set — Decks, Shoes, Clothing, Trucks, Wheels – with all brands in each category eligible to win by ensuring their athletes are registered in the contest. Results will be calculated by the combined final results points (WCS8 point system used) of the top two street results and top vert result (maximum 3 results total) of a sponsored athlete of a brand. Prize money then will be awarded to the team manager of each winning brand.

“The skate industry has done a phenomenal job of growing brands that the audience really follows, explains Sam Baio, President of West 49.We want to support the further growth and recognition of all brands that have help build the industry. We are very excited to extend our sponsorship of the event to include this new division of competition.

Organizers encourage all team managers and athletes to ensure they are registered after June 1st by going to

“We are excited about seeing the team managers being able to win some cash, stated Mark Taylor of IMG Action Sports and the event organizers. “The team managers work so hard organizing the travel, photo shoots, contest schedules and team activities…this will be a big bonus for the team managers of the winning teams here at the Open.

West 49 Canadian Open events will be back with opening concerts in Downtown Toronto and stay tuned for tickets going on sale July 8 at all West 49 locations in Ontario and August 1 at Ticketmaster.

On a final and rather somber note, some bullshit happened to skateshop owner Ed Ryan in Phoenix, Arizona. CJ from Skate One sent the info.. Read on and help a brother out:

Ed Ryan runs Drop In Skate Shop in Phoenix AZ. He was the victim of being robbed at gunpoint and shot in the chest over the weekend, Saturday evening.  He is almost out of ICU, the bullet missed his heart by a fraction of an inch, but he suffered a collapsed lung and has some definite recovery time. Ed is able to breath on his own at this time and is making progress.  He is going to have some out of hand bills, and his wife is less than a month away from having their first child.

Ed was able to save his own life by fleeing out the back door and setting off an alarm.  He made it to a nearby apartment to call 911 and save himself.  The kid is at large, but they have the weapon and Ed will be able to identify him as well.  Fortunately he didn’t make it out with much of anything and couldn’t open the register.

Ed and his wife Kari are great people and definitely are running the shop for the right reasons. I am just trying to help build as much support for them as possible.  A paypal account has been set up for them and their email is  They also plan on holding a fundraiser for Ed at the former Vans park in Phoenix now operated by Fast Forward for either the 7th or 14th of August.
