New Orleans, Save Our Skatepark

In 2012, Mountain Dew, Lil Wayne and the Glu Agency decided to work together with CA Skateparks and the Make it Right Foundation to build the Trukstop Skatepark in the Lower 9th Ward District of New Orleans.

The park was built next to the Lower Ninth Ward Village, a community center, safe haven and beacon of solidarity amongst the surrounding neighborhoods still left in shambles after Katrina hit in 2005. There were DIY skate movements popping up in the area, kids building their own ramps and boards as a pastime to stay out of trouble, and there was a huge opportunity to do good/capitalize on that. The publicity for the Grand Opening was a success – Lil Wayne was there skating, all local TV stations and newspapers came out, city officials spoke, etc. It was a big day that we all expected to mark a significant positive impact on the community.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago when this story runs Lil Wayne skatepark failure a setback for Lower Ninth Ward community center.
Now the park, along with the center, are facing foreclosure. They launched this KickStarter with an ambitious goal.
