In a move that reflects the emerging status of the west coast as the hotbed for skateboarding in Canada, Mayor Larry Campbell has officially proclaimed the week of August 22nd to 28th, 2005 as “Skateboarding Week in the City of Vancouver.

Skateboarding Week in 2005 will take place in tandem with Vancouver’s hosting of the Solo Mobile Slam City Jam presented by Vans, August 26-28 at BC Place Stadium.  Slam City Jam is the North American Skateboarding Championships and the event is widely-recognized as the premiere skateboarding event in the world.

In the Official Proclamation, the Mayor outlines the rationale for the designation of Skateboarding Week: “British Columbia’s skateboarders have brought international distinction to our city with their achievements. Vancouver has developed and established a significant skateboard industry including the largest and oldest professional contest in North America, Slam City Jam, and a thriving skateboard community supported by the Vancouver Skate Park Coalition.

“We’re proud to be somewhat of a showcase for the local skateboarding community and we’re committed to working hard to build on Vancouver’s reputation as Canada’s skateboarding mecca, said Kleo Landucci, President of the Solo Mobile Slam City Jam event which is celebrating its 12th anniversary this year.  “We see Slam City Jam as a forum for the skateboarding community to come together and celebrate our growth and we’re honoured to be holding the event in conjunction with Mayor Larry Campbell’s proclamation of Skateboarding Week in the City of Vancouver.

For three action-packed days, over 150 of the world’s top skateboarders will compete for a prize purse of more than US$100,000 at Solo Mobile Slam City Jam, which is presented by Vans and sponsored by companies such as New Era Cap and Oxy.  Tickets are available at Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.ca or at (604) 280-4400.
