DC Skate Plaza in Shreveport update

After breaking ground in late December 2005, Shreveport, LA is almost ready to officially open their skate plaza. The grand opening is set for March 26th, 2006. Rob Dyrdek of the Rob Dyrdek/DC Shoes Skate Plaza Foundation will be on hand to join Shreveport in celebrating the second skate plaza created with his foundation’s help.

The grand opening celebration will kick off at 2:30pm and include speeches from Shreveport Mayor Keith Hightower and Rob Dyrdek, a ribbon cutting ceremony and a skateboarding demo. The plaza will then be officially opened and local skateboarders will have the opportunity to skate with the various professional and amateur riders that will attend the event. Members of the DC team including Josh Kalis and Greg Myers will join Rob in Shreveport to skate the plaza. Grand Opening information and directions will be posted at www.skateplaza.com.

“I’m excited to make the trip out to Shreveport for this new plaza, said Rob. “The city has been so diligent in this process from day one and now, less than 4 months after they broke ground, the plaza is ready to skate. I hope that other cities see this as an example of how easy it is to create a plaza for their skateboarders.

Shreveport is the second city to build a skate plaza with help from The Rob Dyrdek/DC Shoes Skate Plaza Foundation. The project was spearheaded by the City of Shreveport, who sought to take progressive approach on skateboarding for their community after an ordinance was passed in 2002 prohibiting skating devices in Shreveport’s central business district and prohibiting skating on public roadways. Shreveport Mayor Keith Hightower, knew the city needed to provide a venue for its skateboarding community, so funds were immediately allocated and the process of building the skate plaza began.

The Shreveport Skate Plaza is located on the banks of the Red River and covers 12,500 feet. With two manual pads, three sets of stairs with different rail set-ups, eight ramps, round and square low rails, and twelve benches the plaza provides tons of elements for the modern street skateboarder. The Shreveport Skate Plaza will also feature lights allowing skating 24 hours a day.
