Vans Announces Fourth Annual All Girl Skate Jam To Take Place At Street Scene In San Diego

Vans, Inc., has announced its sponsorship of the fourth annual All Girl Skate Jam to be held on September 12, from 12:00 to 6:00PM. The best amateur and professional female skateboarders from around the world will converge at the San Diego music and entertainment festival, Street Scene, to participate in this history making event. The Vans All Girl Skate Jam, founded in 1997 by soul skater and photographer Patty Segovia has become the only premier skateboarding contest of its kind. This year, the All Girl Skate Jam has expanded from its original once-a-year event to four prestigious international events in Rhode Island, San Diego, Hawaii and Spain.

This year’s event will include a mini ramp and a halfpipe competition as well as a jam format street competition in which 4-5 girls skate at the same time on the course for a pre-determined amount of time. The competitors, including Cara-Beth Burnside, Jen O’Brien, Jamie Reyes, Elissa Steamer amongst others, will compete to earn their share of over $5,000 in cash and prizes. The first-place winners in both the vert and street competitions will take home $1000 each. “More and more females are participating in a variety of Core Sports(tm) such as skateboarding,” says Jay Wilson, Vans’ vice-president of marketing. Wilson adds, “Vans will continue to support females in these sports and create opportunities that may not have been available to them in the past.”

“Looking back on the past three years, it’s clear to me that this contest is taking girl’s skateboarding to a higher level — not only in legitimizing it as a girls sport, but in making it more accessible to girls everywhere,” says Patty Segovia, founder and skateboarder. She adds, “The All Girl Skate Jam is an event where they can see themselves as their role models and truly say, ‘Yeah, I wanna skate like her!”

In addition to the skateboarding action, there will be added excitement created by music booths, product give-a-ways and awards. Also, Mattel’s long awaited SKATEBOARD SHANNEN will make its debut. Modeled after Vans-sponsored rider Jen O’Brien, Skateboard Shannen is the first high performance radio controlled doll that can do jumps, turns, and 360s just like real skaters. Media slated to cover the event includes Fox Sports Net and ESPN2.

The San Diego Street Scene which takes place September 10-12 covers 25 blocks with 14 stages, over 100 bands and a variety of themed areas including Mardi Gras, Blues, Jazz, The Night & Day Mojo House and the all-new Jose Cuervo World Party.
